Allotment Diary

Not quite a blog, but a place to record what is happening on the allotment. This should list all of the successes and frustations of working in the allotment. It should also follow the calendar as much as possible

I have started this diary in December 2006, so a brief word on what has happened since I got the allotment in May 2006. I recieved my keys for the garden from Dun Laoighaire Rathdown County Council in May 2006, and I went down with great intentions of digging it over and planting it all up in a couple of weeks. This was not to be as the ground was like concrete so after 30 minutes of digging and only having a few lumps of soil turned over, I decided that the best way to cultivate the site was to follow a no dig method. To this end I started creating raised beds with planks salvaged from the local industrial estate, into which I started barrowing compost and soil.

These I then planted up and let the plants do the digging. What a success, I would recommend this to anyone, who is not able to dig over their plot of land, for whatever reason. This autumn when I was cleaning out the beds, the soil was much easier to dig over and actually looked like soil rather than lumps of concrete. I must qualify this by saying that this worked for only some plants like potatoes, beans and peas, but not for others such as carrots, which grew into deformed Oompa Loompa carrots.

Update: The allotment site will be re-opened later this week, as new keys are being issued along with our rental agreements. Can't wait. Lots of things to do.

Allotment site is locked indefinitely
I recieved a letter from the DLR council, stating that the allotment site is closed and all allotment holders are asked to refrain from attempting unauthorized entry to the site. The reason is someone has interfered with the locks, which had started to act up anyway. They should leave the gate open while they sort out the locks, March 2008
So far I have planted Broad Beans, and some onions, I have spent the past few months digging over the beds that have been empty since autumn, recently I came across the idea of stale seed beds and so that is what I have been creating since January, though the Six Nations has gotten in the way of this plan, but at least since I am deliberately starting late this year it is not to much of a problem.
The plan for the slugs this year is wood ash and on other part of the allotment, lime, die you slimy fiends of hell.
Reminder to myself net the red currants this year, last year I had bountiful crop one week and the next it was gone, I suspect into the stomachs of the local pigeons, though it has to be said that 'borrowing' of other peoples stuff is not unheard of, hopefully it does not extend to produce.
October 2007
This growing year has been a trial for a number of reasons, first we had an extended dry spell, which done and stunted many plants, then we had a cloudy and wet summer which did in for any plants that managed to survive the dry April.
When I went on holidays in June most plants were just about recovering and thne when I got back 3 weeks later everything was covered in weeds. much more than last year, - what a nightmare, I nearly gave up then. But then the potatoes had actually grown and some how missed the dreaded blight, I am not sure how, but it might be the weeds :). this autumn the strawberries have been lifting my spirits when I get a chance to visit. Even though my beans and peas this year got absolutely savaged by slugs (last year they were left alone) the stawberries only got mildly attacked, was it all due to the sand that I spread on the strawberry plot?
Any way now for digging before it all gets too wet. All the plots have had plants growing on them this year so it should be fairly easy to turn them over in preperation for next years growing season.
May 2007
It has been a busy month, most of the hard landscaping (digging out beds) is now done, all that remains is to construct the cold frame, which I am putting off until September.
Everything has suffered from the warm dry April that we have had, but at last we have some rain. I had thought about watering - but I decided that it was too much bother, and was not in keeping with my reasons for having an allotment as a hobby. One of my reasons for taking up allotmenteering as a hobby was that I did not have to commit myself to any set time, therefore allowing myself the freedom to be able to respond to other opportunities as and when they arise, such as an impromptu weekend away.
Of my planting scheme again most items are in the ground, if not exactly thriving, note I planted some Tesco potatoes (I know all the gardening books say not too) and they are one of the plants that are thriving. My carrots and parsnips did not sprout most likely because it was too dry when I planted them. I guess I need to resow that bed. I have some substitue plants sown at home in seed trays, with a bit of luck they will be ready to go into the ground in the next two weeks.
A mjor casualty has been the raspberries that I got from a fellow freecycler - 4 of them have died due to lack of water and the crop of blackcurrants have all shrivelled up, oh well at least the plants are still alive, I will try again next year, after I have manured those beds this autumn.
April 2007
After almost 6 weeks of inactivity at the allotment work has started again. So far I have planted early potatoes during the middle of March, they have taken one and a half beds. (note to self find out what you planted.) At the end of March I planted out my main crop of potatoes, Maris Pipers. These have taken up the space of one bed.
February was also my birthday month and I recieved some Autumn raspberries along with some red and white currants, these are all planted and haven taken. Now I have full beds of raspberrries, currants and strawberries, the blackcurrants are doing especially well, which is surprising as I just took cuttings from existing wild plants in the area and pushed them into some compost filled holes; wow plants for free. The redcurrants and raspberries that I planted in January are also doing well and it looks like all of the plants have taken.
I have also put down some onion sets and planted early peas and dwarf French beans. A minority of the broad beans have surfaced. I am disappointed with my seeds sowed at home as very few have sprouted, however I need to be patient as they are in a unheated shed.
Another couple of beds have been raised and after last years debacle I have dug over the carrot bed.
The broad beans and peas have started to sprout in both shed and allotment. I have also sown lettuce, radish and beetroot in the salads bed.
January 2007
At last I have managed to get some Raspberries and currants, both red and black varities. Howver the ground is very wet and the weather very windy, so I am not overly hopeful that they will settle in their new environments.
The garlic has taken off and is growing well, however the broad beans planted on December the 17'th have not sprouted - it does not look good for them. I also sowed some onion seeds on the 30'th of December.
With a bit of luck I will get some more digging done this month and next. I am also planning on sowing seeds in seed trays in my covered side passage.
I got down to the plot last Saturday, when there was a break in the weather, and I got two more beds dug over, this year after my deformed carrots I am digging more of the beds, plus it is necessary to do this to get rid of the weeds that I left grow on the fallow patches.

December 2006

This month I have the strawberries, currants, garlic and broad beans planted. Both the garlic and strawberries were planted in November, the garlic has started to sprout, and the stawberries have started to grow in their new home.
Next month will let me know if the currants have taken root, I have followed the advice of a fellow freecycler and I have taken cuttings from other currants growing nearby and have stuck them in compost and soil in the hope that they will grow. Myself and friend also prepared the raised bed for the raspberries, which I hope to collect later this month.
Next on the list is to plant the leeks and onions, I will be doing these in seed trays for planting out later as long as the frosts hold off.

I have gotten some early and late raspberries from a fellow freecycler, I hope to get them planted as soon as the ground dries up a bit. Along with them came a loganberry and some dill. Currently they are in pots as they await the break in the weather.

A Good Weekend	At last we had some good weather and I got down to the plot for an afternoon, of planting and preperation. I put in my peas Kelvedon Wonder and some Sugar Snap peas that I bought in Lidl last year. All peas and beans last year were demolished by the slugs, and as I am trying to stay organic and avoiding chemicals, I have decided to try lime to keep away the slimy fiends. The beans are still too young to leave the shed, alas no greenhouse for me. The plot for the courgette and cucumbers was also prepared, as well as weeding the potatoe plots. It was good to see the First Earlies poking their shoots above ground.
At last the answer to Slugs	I read in the Irish Times, about the various uses of wood ash, one of which was to deter slugs and snails from your plants. I have tried it out on some delphinium shoots in the home garden to great success so last Thursday number one son spread a bucket of wood ash on his favourite vegetables, the peas and beans. Here's hoping that this works in the pest warfare that is allotment gardening, I have high hopes for it. I have not given up on the lime just yet, but it did get washed off in the recent heavy rain that we had last weekend. While it was on it looked to have worked long enough for the plants to get a head start.
New Allotment Diary	Today the 22'nd of April 2008, I got my new key for the new allotment lock. Ordinarily I would say 'about bloody time', but the wheather has been so cold of late, that precious few of my seeds have germinated back the house nursery. At the moment it is mainly peas that are above the soil level, and the runner beans are starting to show.
No posts during the summer!	Again I seem to have lost interest in posting during the summer months, I guess because I am just not at the computer in the long summer evenings. Autumn has arrived a long with darkness at 20:00. So had did things go this summer, well the rain did not help the work down in the allotment. Poatatoes have been blighted, but we have had some dinners with ones that I got dug up, the other that are still in the ground I am think will have rotted, but then again you never know. Onions did well this year, I have harvested half at this stage and will hopefully get to the rest later this week. The summer Raspberries did not produce much after showing much promise earlier in the season. However the autumn Raspberries are producing well. Thanks to some kind souls I have celery and chicory growing along with my sweetcorn, which has not ripened yet, but is on its way.
